And she's not alone; curious visitors form long queues, eager to indulge in this famed fruit and other tropical specialties like Thai jasmine rice and freeze-dried mangosteen.
But here's where it gets interesting: this buzz around tropical treats isn't just a fun trend. It's a reflection of China's growing appetite for high-quality imports and its deepening trade relationship with ASEAN, its largest trading partner for an impressive 16 years running.
Exhibitors from ASEAN have made a significant impact this year at CIIE. Their exhibition space and participant numbers have surged, growing by an impressive 40% and 50%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Soo Wei Chieh, executive director of Singapore Business Federation's (SBF) International Business Division, sums it up perfectly: "CIIE is more than just a showcase; it's a gateway to deeper connections with China's market and global value chains."
Led by SBF, a delegation of 57 Singaporean businesses is attending, marking their eighth consecutive year at the world's first national-level import expo. Meanwhile, Malaysia has brought its largest-ever pavilion, with over 800 representatives from more than 250 companies showcasing a diverse range of products, from food and beverages to agricultural goods and healthcare items. Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, sees CIIE as a strategic bridge for long-term economic collaborations, not just with China but across the ASEAN and East Asia regions.
The strong presence of ASEAN businesses at CIIE is a testament to the thriving trade ties between China and the bloc. Bilateral trade has seen a healthy 9.7% year-on-year growth in the first eight months of this year alone. These durians quickly became the talk of the town, and within just six months, the company's market share for Malaysian durians in China skyrocketed tenfold. For years, transporting these delicate tropical fruits and fresh coconuts from Southeast Asia to China was a logistical challenge, with distances of 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers to cover. But thanks to advancements in cold-chain logistics and faster cross-border customs clearance, this journey has been transformed. Now, freshly picked Musang King durians can reach Chinese consumers within an incredible 36 hours.
Zheng Herui, general manager of Best Penang Durian, a Malaysian durian exhibitor, highlights the changing preferences of Chinese consumers: "They're developing a taste for high-quality goods." And the numbers don't lie; the company's 80 kilograms of fresh Musang King durians sold out in just one day at the expo!
The optimism doesn't stop there. Last month, the China-ASEAN FTA 3.0 Upgrade Protocol was signed, opening up new avenues for cooperation in the digital economy, green transition, and supply-chain resilience. He Min, an associate professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, sees this upgrade as a significant step towards "institutional opening." He explains, "By removing barriers and aligning rules and standards, we're building a more resilient and inclusive regional economic community."
Soo Wei Chieh expresses confidence in China's long-term potential, driven by its growing middle class. He credits government policy support and platforms like CIIE for facilitating market entry and attracting sustained interest from Singaporean companies. "There's immense potential for collaboration, especially in technology, particularly the digital economy and green economy," Soo adds.
